Fair Haven Shade Tree Commission Plans Event in Honor of Arbor Day

The Fair Haven Tree Shade Commission joined with borough library to hold a story time for children.

Fair Haven's Shade Tree Commission has found a kid-friendly way to celebrate Arbor Day.

Arbor Day is celebrated Nationwide on the last Friday in April, and encourages the planting and care of trees. Some states celebrate Arbor Day on a different date, depending on their best tree-planting weather.

This year, The Fair Haven Shade Tree Commission (FSTC) will host a library story time where children will receive rooted saplings to take home and plant. This event will take place on May 17th, about two weeks after Arbor Day.

"We are waiting to get the saplings from the 4-H club in Freehold," said Elizabeth Lilleston, chair of the FSTC. "They will not be ready for another few weeks. When they are ready, I will be going there to pick them myself."

During the library story time, there will be book readings and activities that are associated with Arbor Day. Each child that attends the story time will receive a sapling to take home. "The saplings will come with instructions for the kids about how and where to plant them," said Lilleston.

Planting the saplings will give children the opportunity to understand and appreciate the importance of planting trees. "We want the children to have a hands-on experience planting trees for Arbor Day," said Lilleston. "These saplings will give them that opportunity."

The library story time on May 17th will be held at the Borough Hall in Fair Haven. There will be a morning story time for pre-school children and an afternoon group for school aged children.

The event is sponsored by the FTSC in-conjunction with the library board.
