On Friday, March 7, the Upper School Drama Club presented the musical Bye Bye Birdie to a packed house. An adaptation of the 1963 musical comedy film about an Elvis-Presley-type singer who descends on the small, Midwestern town of Sweet Apple, Ohio with hilarious results. The production was directed by Joy Rathemacher, Lower School Curriculum Coordinator at RCDS with musical direction by Robin Benowitz. The students worked for weeks to prepare for the show and practiced after school to learn lines, songs and choreography.
In addition to the annual Lower School and Upper School theater productions, each grade level puts on its own play every year. The opportunity to perform in front of a live audience rounds out their educational experience and gives them a chance to flex their muscles in memorization, public speaking, and teamwork skills. Best of all, the students had fun working with each other and learning more about the end of the late 50’s/early 60’s rock n’roll era.
