Monmouth Medical Center Cytogeneticist Honored as National Outstanding Technologist

Long Branch, N.J. – Monmouth Medical Center cytogeneticist Cathy Smock was recently named National Outstanding Technologist by the Foundation for Genetic Technology at the Annual Meeting of the National Association of Genetic Technologists (AGT).

 

AGT is a non-profit professional organization established to promote cooperation and exchange of information among those engaged in classical cytogenetics, molecular and biochemical genetics, and to stimulate interest in genetics as a career.

Selected by a panel of reviewers from across the country, Smock, a resident of Brick,  was recognized for her 39-year career in Monmouth Medical Center’s Cytogenetics Laboratory, as well as her character, leadership ability and contributing above and beyond what her job description. An active member of AGT, Smock has attended the national meeting for eight years, at her own expense, and participated as a presenter.

“Cathy is an asset to the laboratory, as well as Monmouth Medical Center as a whole,” said Patricia LeMay supervisor, Monmouth Medical Center Cytogenetics Laboratory. “To be the nationally recognized Outstanding Technologist is quite an honor for Cathy and for all of us.”   

 

Monmouth Medical Center’s Cytogenetics Laboratory performs chromosome analysis on a variety of specimens, with an emphasis on oncology, and Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) studies. Together, these studies aid physicians with the diagnoses of many congenital genetic syndromes and help to classify oncology specimens, which can aid in diagnosis, prognosis and therapies for patients.
