Mayor's Cup Regatta Postings

Thirty-two (32) boats participated in the second annual Fair Haven Mayor’s Cup Regatta held on Saturday, July 6th on the Navesink River.  The first Regatta was held during the Fair Haven Centennial Celebration last year.  The Shrewsbury River Yacht Club (SRYC) in Fair Haven, hosted this year’s event’s Awards and Barbeque following the Regatta. Boats of all designs participated.  There were Seventeen (17) boats in the Cruising Class and One–design Fleets and Fifteen (15) boats in the Optimists Fleet.  “I am pleased that the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club held this event which brought together boaters from both rivers, creating the excitement of a local regatta and continuing the rich sailing tradition of our area.” said Fair Haven Mayor Ben Lucarelli.

It was a Portsmouth Handicap Regatta following the Racing Rules of Sailing as adopted by US Sailing.  Cruising Class and the One Design Fleet competed for the silver cup that is kept and being displayed at the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club, Fair Haven. The Champion of the Regatta was Bolt, Jack Harrington Skipper of Atlantic Highlands, finishing in 74:25 minutes.  Coming in Second Place was Double Deuce, Randy Dickerson Skipper and last year’s Champion of the Cup.  Third Place went to Puffin , Dennis Farley Skipper.  The First Place finisher of the Cruising Class was Double Deuce, Second Place was Pirates of Fair Haven, Sam Oncea Skipper of Fair Haven and Third Place was Ariel, Phil Arneheiter Skipper of Little Silver.  In addition trophies were given for the Junior’s Optimist Fleet. First Place finisher for this fleet was Harry Ricker, of Fair Haven; Second Place Zak Dasaro and Third Place was Michael Dasaro, both of Holmdel.

Chairing the Mayor’s Cup Regatta Committee was Sam Oncea, SRYC Commodore of Fair Haven. Committee members included Carl Bergeron , Middletown, John McGuire, Cindy DeLaski, Dick Muise, Jon and Mary Friedman, Michael and Trish Halfacre and Laura Oncea all of Fair Haven, and all from: Shrewsbury River Yacht Club, Fair Haven; Kelly Zweig, SSYC Commodore of Tinton Falls,  and Susan Ricker, Fair Haven of Shrewsbury Sailing Yacht Club, Oceanport;  Joe Malik, Middletown of Fair Haven Sailing Club, (River Rats), Fair Haven;  Jim Cerruti of Fair Haven Yacht Works, Fair Haven; Skip Bugbee and Les Hathaway of Monmouth Boat Club, Red Bank; and Mayor Ben Lucarelli, Fair Haven Borough.
