Remembering Those Lost to 9/11

Where to remember those from the area lost to 9/11.

Good morning, all. It's a somber day today as we remember 9/11.

It was 12 years ago when the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City changed American lives forever.

In this area, many of our commuting family, friends and neighbors were lost to the attacks. Take a moment to remember them.

If you would like to do so in the company of others at a service, there are a few in the area and the weather forecast has changed to one of sunny skies with temperatures in the high 80s:

• There will also be a county memorial service at 8 a.m. at Mount Mitchill overlook in Atlantic Highlands to honor the memory of the 147 residents from all of Monmouth County who perished in the terrorist attacks.

In Fair Haven, there will be a small gathering and wreath laying at 8:30 a.m. at Memorial Park at the corner of Fair Haven and River roads. There is a 9/11 memorial in the park as well as benches dedicated to those lost to the attacks.

• Wreaths will also be laid at the Rumson memorial at Piping Rock Park where a memorial sits at the base of the flagpole.

• In Red Bank, there will be a memorial ceremony at 6 p.m. hosted by the Red Bank Elks at Riverside Gardens Park, where a makeshift memorial was erected in the immediate aftermath of the attacks and a permanent one is in place.

• In Shrewsbury, there will be a small gathering at 9 a.m. at the municipal complex.

• In Middletown, where 37 residents were lost to the attacks, there will be a tribute at the World Trade Center Memorial Gardens next to the train station on Church Street. The ceremony traditionally starts at 8:46 a.m., the time that the first plane struck the World Trade Center.

The memorial was built next to the train station to serve as a symbolic place for reflection, since many residents left for work that day on the train and never made it home.

The gardens are open every day from dawn to dusk and feature a wooded path dotted with memorial stones with the faces and quotes of remembrance etched in each. If you have not yet been there, it's a place that should be visited. It's tranquil and breathtaking.

The following is a list of those from Rumson, Fair Haven, Red Bank and Shrewsbury who perished in the terrorist attacks:

• Mark Hemschoot, 45, and Brendan Lang, 30, Red Bank. Lang is formerly of Middletown and there is a stone in the memorial gardens for him as well.

• Robert Talhami and Sal Tieri, Jr., of Shrewsbury

• James Martello, Keith Coleman, Keith McHeffey, Michael J McCabe, W. David Bauer, Donald Walter Robertson Jr., Glen Wall, Greg Malone, Michael Tucker, Karl Smith and Stephen Canaialosi, of Rumson.

• Ted Luckett, Ed McNally, Todd Pelino and Kaleen Pezzuti, of Fair Haven.

Peace and remembrance to all today …
