• The tradition of Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes at the Count Basie on New Year's Eve continues for the 15th year. But, there's an addition this year.

Read about it in the following release sent by the Basie …

The Count Basie Theatre will kick off New Jersey’s 350th birthday celebration year with a New Year’s Eve concert featuring Jersey-centric Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and the opening of the first official New Jersey 350 Pop-Up store to commemorate three and a half centuries of life in the Garden State.

Southside Johnny’s New Year’s Eve performances at the Count Basie Theatre have become a 15-year Jersey Shore tradition.

“Since the Count Basie Theatre’s renovations, it has been one of my very favorite places to play,” ‘Southside’ Johnny Lyon said. “The sound is perfect, the staff is great and the audiences are always enthusiastic. It’s good to have such a venue right in my own backyard.”

Coupled with the traditional Southside New Year's Eve concert, Red Bank's first of fourteen NJ350 Pop-Up stores will be open on-site at the Basie next to the theatre’s Carlton Lounge.

“We are proud that the Count Basie Theatre and our annual New Year’s Eve celebration is the official kick off for NJ350,” Count Basie Theatre CEO Adam Philipson said. “We’re delighted to work with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the New Jersey Historical Commission, and we couldn’t think of a more appropriate artist than Jersey’s own Southside Johnny to help us kick off the New Year together.”

What's a Pop-Up store?

With the inaugural Red Bank Pop-Up sponsored by the Count Basie Theatre and Red Bank RiverCenter, NJ350 Pop-Up stores, which will show up all around the state during the year, will specialize in merchandise with a unique New Jersey focus.

Featured products are what curators have dubbed "Jerseyana." Included are the Jerseyopoly board game and “Goodnight Jersey” children’s book, as well as NJ350 and state-branded merchandise; educational items; items specific to the history of Red Bank and the Count Basie Theatre; Governor Chris Christie’s popular state- silhouette lapel pin and more. The Red Bank location will remain open through Jan. 6, 2014.

• We'll be stopping by the Pop-Up store to grab some photos. Stay tuned.

• We will be featuring, for the end of the year, Fair Haven's Volunteer of the Year and a few more goodies.

• Later and into tomorrow, we will also feature some more year-end stories on issues as well as looks back at some popular stories, photos and what to look for in 2014.

Weather, sun, moon and tide tidbits …

• It's supposed to be clear and breezy today with a high of 41 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The New Year's Day forecast calls for partly sunny skies with high temperatures in the 30s.
