The small, casual eatery was one of the only Red Bank businesses affected by Sandy
After taking a beating by Hurricane Sandy, Boondocks Fishery is back on the dock that the storm nearly swept away. Friday was the small outdoor eatery's comeback opening night and owner Kelly Ryan could not have been more thrilled to see her place for Two River residents go from dumpster debris to the prime casual dining by the Navesink River spot that it was before Sandy. "It's great to be back," Ryan said with an ear-to-ear smile as she greeted and seated customers. "This dock wasn't in place. It had to be shifted over. The water was five-and-a-half feet and had taken it over. It's been a long ride, but I just couldn't be happier and more grateful of the support I received." After Sandy left the small spot all but flattened and floating …

The Kwik Farms convenience store in the Tinton Falls Lukoil sold a winning Mega Millions ticket.
Tom Schweers woke up thinking he struck it big--$95 million big. Every day, the 64-year-old West Long Branch man buys an instant ticket and occasionally springs for a Mega Millions ticket at the Kwik Farms in the Lukoil station on Shrewsbury Avenue on Tinton Falls. The store sold one of the two winning $95 million Mega Millions tickets in the country, the New Jersey Lottery announced Sunday morning. When Schweers heard his local lottery dealer was the winning ticket seller, he thought he could be holding the winning ticket. And then he realized he bought Powerball instead of Mega Millions. “Of course, I probably would have won the damn thing. When I heard the news, I said ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” Schweers said. Schweers stopped by …

The gourmet market was originally expected to open in April
Someone's cooking up an early bird special of the fine foods kind in Fair Haven. After much anticipation and a few unforseen delays, Balderose Fine Foods Market will open its doors Friday morning. And an early grand opening it will be — at 6 a.m. A peek into the front windows of the former Esther's, Corner Room and Gourmet Picnic at River and Fair Haven roads is shows the signs of readiness, but you can also take ownership's word for it. "Please join us this Friday for our opening," a post on the eatery's Facebook page says. "Doors will open at 6 a.m. Hope to see you all then." When Patch first spoke with co-owner Bill Dodge, he said the plan was to open sometime in April. A couple of unrealized hitches later, the owners announced a May 4 …

Cue up the mariachi band. Cinco de Mayo is fast approaching. The celebration of Mexican heritage on May 5 is sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day. However, Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Battle of Puebla, a turning point in Mexican history and freedom. In the U.S., it is celebrated by observing Mexican culture through food, drinks and dancing. If you are looking for a fiesta with margaritas, live bands and authentic food, read on for the best places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the Two River area. Developers competed in a 24-hour hackathon, creating applications to support businesses impacted by Sandy.
Tech talents from across the state pulled an all-nighter in Asbury Park last weekend, contributing code to help restore the Shore. The Jersey Shore Comeback-A-Thon, a 24-hour hackathon sponsored by Marathon Data Systems of Wall, challenged developers to create an application to benefit the local business community in the first summer following Superstorm Sandy. “There’s nothing like coding for a good cause,” said Cory Cardio, a Long Branch resident who teamed up with Margaret Kim of Fort Lee and Gary Kagan of Sebastain, Fla. under the moniker “Team Mango.” The trio’s crowd-sourced application allowing community members to give and receive up-to-the-minute location-based information was selected as the hackathon winner. Cardio, Kim and …

Former new Sea Bright burger place to open in a few weeks with tables outside; outdated ordinance revisited to encourage outdoor dining
Three weeks. That's the timeframe. At the end of three weeks, Fair Havenites should see the new Kind Burgers open on River Road and patrons dining outdoors. The new gluten-free gourmet burger joint, transplanted from its Hurricane Sandy-slammed spot in Sea Bright, will join the Fair Haven business and sidewalk cafe family right on the cusp of the unofficial summer's start. The sidewalk dining permit was approved, contingent on an anticipated zoning go-ahead, at last week's Borough Council meeting. However, the approval came with a grandfathered kink in the ordinance that officials are now working out. Co-owner Anthony Cafaro, of Rumson, showed at the meeting and told the governing body of his enthusiasm to open by mid-May and offer the …
