UPDATE: High Speed Chase Leads To Crash, Two Deaths

Car reportedly fled after being stopped by police

Two occupants of a car that was involved in a high-speed chase with the Tinton Falls police late Wednesday night are dead after a crash in the borough.

Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Richard Incremona said that two Tinton Falls police officers stopped a 2008 Subaru Impreza with three male occupants on Shafto Road around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night. When one of the officers approached the vehicle, he spotted a .380 semi-automatic handgun in the car, the assistant prosecutor said.

Incremona said the officer grabbed the gun and immediately alerted the other officer about the gun. The driver then fled the scene at speeds "in excess of 100 miles per hour," as the two police officers pursued, Incremona said.

The driver then lost control of the vehicle after about a mile and half down the road and hit several trees on the side of the road. Two of the vehicle's occupants were ejected from the car and the third occupant was extricated by first responders.

Incremona said two of the vehicle's occupants are dead, but did not release any of their names and said he was unsure if one or both of the occupants who were ejected had died. He said the names would be released once their next of kin is notified.

Incremona said investigators also found a loaded 9mm handgun in the car after the crash.

He said no shots were fired by the police or the occupants of the vehicles during the incident.

The incident is being investigated by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, including its Major Crimes and Professional Responsibilities units. Tinton Falls Police, Wall Township Police, Monmouth County Sheriff's Office and the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team. MONOC, Wayside North and South First Aid and the Wayside Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Incremona said the investigation will also include a probe into whether the officers demonstrated "full compliance with state and county laws of pursuit."

Please drive carefully and defensively! Our brave officers saved us from these speeding and illegally armed people. However, on the road beware, drive defensively. Such speeding fools may appear at any time, any place.
