Columbus Day is a federal holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on Oct. 12, 1492.

The day was unofficially celebrated across the country in the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until 1937.

Although the holiday and Columbus have stirred up some controversy, many celebrate to honor his achievements and Italian-American heritage. However, many alternatives to the holiday have appeared in recent years.
