There it was — a creepy looking little crawler on the Fair Haven Dock.
It was a little crabby looking, a little homely yet cool, covered in what looked like barnacles. Its eyes were masked by its craggy surface. Everyone stared. But was it staring back?
What was it? Someone said it was a rock crab — not edible. Someone else called it a spider crab. To look at it, both made sense. Everyone stared as it crawled across the dock and plopped back into the Navesink River. But, really, what was that creepy little crawler?

We have staffer who grew up in South Jersey, who confirmed that this is indeed a spider crab, and you most certainly don't eat these. To get technical, this is a longnose spider crab -- Libinia dubia -- at least according to the Smithsonian.
