Thousands gathered on the beach outside Convention Hall on New Year’s Day. Some were there to dive into the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, while others were there to cheer on the charitable endeavor.

The 9th Annual Sons of Ireland Polar Plunge raised money for The Ashley Lauren Foundation and the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Fund, both of Holmdel; The Barn for the Poorest of the Poor, based in Colts Neck; and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth and Middlesex Counties.

An event that started in 2003 as a tradition among a group of Christian Brothers Academy alumni has turned into annual fundraiser organized by the Rumson-based Sons of Ireland.
