RFH Rowing Trains at the United States Military Academy
High school students got to practice in the home of Army Crew in preparation for their spring season.
Members of the RFH Rowing team got to work-out and test their technical skills Army style.
The team, made up of all Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School students, traveled to West Point in New York on Sunday, Jan. 23. The team had the opportunity to try out the equiptment in the United States Military Academy’s indoor rowing tanks and experience practice like colligiate rowers.
“Our coaching staff never misses an opportunity to expose us to fine college coaches and rowers," said rower Chris Duffney of Rumson.
The team was happy to prepare before the spring scholastic season in the the home of Army Crew.
And, this is not the first time the RFH Rowing team has been in front of college-level talent. Rumson and Fair Haven families have hosted about one hundred college rowers including the Army cadets during “The Rumson Boat Race” held in Rumson each Fall.
According to the organization, RFH Rowing student-athletes continue to enjoy a high level of college recruiting activity. "RFH Rowing coaches are to be commended for exposing the RFH students to collegiate rowing experiences," said Rumson Mayor John Ekdahl. "We all look forward to the Third Annual Regatta next fall to be contested from the newly organized RFH Rowing property adjacent to Victory Park."
Being exposed to such high-level of competition must have inspired the crew team, because they have had very successful past seasons.
Last year, RFH Rowing competed in eleven regattas in the Mid-Atlantic States. The men’s varsity won the Bronze Medal in the 2011 Garden State Championships and earned the right to compete in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America’s National Championship. Past crews have posted wins against top high school teams in the Long Island Championships, The Cooper Cup, Lake Lenape Sprints, and The Saint Andrews Regatta.
