On a sunny crisp Saturday, fans dressed in purple, black, and white and headed south on Ocean Avenue to Asbury Park High School to root their Dawgs on to victory against the Blue Bishops.
Looking around the stands, there were Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) fans of all ages and from near and far hoping to see a great battle.
The game started out a little slow with no points on the board for most of the first quarter, but with four minutes left, Danny Roberto connected to Jake Clapp for the lead, 7-0. That got the ball rolling. The Bulldogs were all business on the field, calmly executing plays on both sides of the ball, while the fans went wild in the stands.
Midway through the second quarter, RFH successfully tried a double pass from Roberto to Kevin O’Connor to Blake Potter bringing the score to RFH 14 - AP 0.
The Bishops managed to score once before halftime bringing the score to RFH 14 - AP 6.
The Dawg D banded together and made an impressive statement against the Bishops by holding them to zero points and less than ten yards the whole second half.
Sophomore, JT Jennings joined the linebacker corps this week, flanked by Brian Truex and Travis Clark. Roberto found Potter eight times in the game for over 150 yards. Jack Miles has only carried the ball a few times this season, but every time he does, he carries it into the end zone and this game was no exception. One more touchdown pass from Roberto to Nico Giaimo brought the final score to RFH 28 – AP 6.
With both the RFH Dawgs and the Manasquan Warriors winning their games this weekend, there is a unique situation for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. They tallied the scores on five levels and found both teams to be tied for first by wins, power points, and strength of schedule. That brought the decision for top seed down to a coin toss at NJSIAA headquarters Monday morning.
The coin flipped heads up in Rumson’s favor and the Dawgs claimed the top spot. Shane Fallon, head coach of RFH, said, “We are very pleased to be 8-0 and to have earned the #1 seed for the Central Jersey Group 2 playoffs. Our 28-6 win over Asbury Park was a great team effort.”
This team just keeps on giving fans reasons to believe.
This Friday, November 11th RFH (1) will face Rahway (8) on their home turf at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School at 7pm. Don't miss it!
