Is This the Most Outrageous New Jersey Map Ever?
Or does it accurately, if irreverently, reflect the state's diversity?
You won't find the latest map of New Jersey in your nearest convenience store. Instead, you will find it trending on Facebook news feeds and online forums.
Joe Steinfeld, a 22-year old Rutgers graduate, claims authorship of the edgy, tongue-in-cheek map, which subdivides the Garden State into social, financial and ethnic realms. In less than 24 hours it has gone viral.
"I made it on Monday, Dec. 5. I posted it to the r/newjersey section of Reddit.com (click to see the map) hoping to get some comments and start a conversation. It wasn't until I logged onto Facebook on Tuesday morning and was greeted by dozens of notifications that I saw it had completely gone viral," Steinfeld said.
Steinfeld is a Westfield native, and currently works for the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, monitoring preserved lands and maintaining trails. He also works with the Geographic Information Systems, making maps of preserves and researching resource conservation.
"I've been all around the state and have met plenty of people from all corners of New Jersey, and noticing all the differences in cultures and demographics informed my mapmaking," he said. "It also helped that when going to Rutgers University, I made friends with people from all over the state and got to hear stories from where they grew up, what it was like, who lives where in the state, and how in such a small area exists so many different kinds of people."
Whether the map is seen as lampooning New Jersey, ethnic diversity or stereotypes may be in the eye of the beholder, but Steinfeld believes most people will be amused rather than offended.
"Oh, plenty of people have been chiming in, pointing out my inaccuracies, but for the most part, it's been met with laughter and praise," he said. "So far, I haven't received any [negative feedback], so I feel pretty confident. I didn't mean to offend any one group in particular, and for the most part, people have understood that it's meant to be funny."
After a few hours of searching Google Maps and using Photoshop to fill in a blank map of the state, Steinfeld has created a piece of Internet gold, for better or worse.
Steinfeld did say some areas of the state were too small to fit a map of that scale, so some areas are generalized, particularly in the northeast.
"I wanted to make it a tongue-in-cheek 'subjective' map of the state, and hoped not to offend anyone, and I feel like I did a good job," he said.

Here's a quick note from Wikipedia:
"the English loanword "Polack" is considered an ethnic slur across the English-speaking world, and therefore is inherently insulting in nearly all modern usages"
I thought America had moved beyond racial, religious and ethnic slurs many years ago; disappointing to hear from a fellow Rutgers alumnus.
No slurs, please!
Mattie
6:31 pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2011
Did I miss something? has it been deleted? Did someone say "Polacks"?
Mattie
6:39 pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2011
Never mind... I see it now. I kept reading it as "Polish"....
that being said, I have to admit I never knew polack was considered a a real slur. it's a word I've never used, and never heard my family use either.
Uncle Frank
7:02 pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2011
Steinfeld says, "I didn't mean to offend any one group in particular." Oh really! I think it's interesting how that particular slur is the only one he used. He should lose his job.
Mattie
9:34 pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2011
Seriously, maybe the guy just didn't realize it was a slur. I honestly didn't know it was.
I have one Polish cousin(in law), and I've heard her say Polack many times, I never knew it wasn't just another word for "Polish". But I thought about it since it's been pointed out, I guess it's like Italians saying "guinea" when they talk negatively about someone amongst themselves - but don't appreciate it when 'outsiders' use it...
I'm gonna give the kid the benefit of the doubt on this one.
Uncle Frank
5:50 am on Thursday, December 8, 2011
What this comment section confirms is that Polish people are still viewed as outcasts and looked down upon by most of the commenters. Have any of you thought it would also have been okay to have used the N-word, "tard" or a gay slur on this map?
Mattie
6:21 am on Thursday, December 8, 2011
No Frank, with me it confirms that I didn't use that word, nor was raised hearing that word, and therefore as an adult never realized it was a slur. I admitted that. How does that mean I don't respect Polish people or think it's OK to use slurs?
Lets keep the paranoia in context, ok?

I kinda find this funny and sad at the same time. It speaks to the diversity in the state and also some of it's issues. Why would anyone want him fired over his opinion and views of our State. You might not like it but as American's you should defend his right to express his opinion. Politically correct speech is limited speech. Think of it this way would you want your job to depend on your opinion always being in line with whoever decides what it should be?
Wise N Heimer

What if he had used the "N word" or the slur word for gays? Would you still feel the same way? Put yourself in the shoes of a Polish-American, my friend. I can't believe only 10% of those polled found the slur to be offensive.
Uncle Frank
3:46 pm on Friday, December 9, 2011
Mr. Smith, A slur is a slur, and this slur has been around long before anyone thought of the term "politically correct." Also, a slur is not an opinion. I have heard this slur for all of my 60 years, and it is most often accompanied by the word "dumb." I am sick and tired of it and fail to understand why anyone thinks it's funny or okay.

At the same time people should be allowed to express their feelings that this bothers them without being told to "lighten up" or being too sensitive. Just let everyone express their views about the map without jumping all over them because they may not agree it's funny. Personally, it was creative but that's about it. I do find it interesting that no one commented on "Philly Trash". Being from Philly originally, I guess that a native NJ thing.

wow....guess it's a good thing there are enough politically correct people to balance out the not so. again, another resident of the "happy white family" section that wants every one to lighten up about the ethnic comments. Being politically incorrect is one thing but telling someone to lighten up because you don't think it's insensitive is another. For those commentors who think others should "lighten up" is there any ethnic or racial slur that would be offensive to you or are they all acceptable. One other thought, that "happy white family" section where many of us live, what do you tell our black, asian, hispanic, etc neighbors who also live there? Guess they'll have to be "happy white" too.
