In Honor: Memorial Day Services {Video}
There are parades in both Rumson and Fair Haven
Patch is remembering those who have served and are serving today, Memorial Day.
To commemorate the event, we have put together a short video comprised of all the vets whose families sent in photos.
Patch is also reminding Rumson and Fair Haven residents that there are two events today dedicated to our vets' memories.
In Fair Haven there will be a parade at 9 a.m., starting at Knollwood School. The parade will travel down Hance Road to River and then to the Fair Haven firehouse for a short stop. It will culminate at Veterans' Park on River Road. Those participating are asked to line up in the Knollwood School parking lot starting at 8:45 a.m.
The parade in Rumson starts at 10 a.m. and ends with a ceremony in Victory Park.

It is a lovely parade, but I, and my fellow Jewish Fair Havenites, have the same issue, year after year. At the close of ceremonies, a local member of the clergy makes a prayer, suitable for the occasion and the public event, and invariably invokes the name of Jesus Christ, which, to put it mildly, is not proper for a public, non-sectarian occasion, but is exclusionary and offensive to those of us who are not Christian. I do not wish to seem overly sensitive or politically correct, but I strongly feel it is time this issue is at least understood by our good friends and neighbors.

Victor, FH does not have a rabbi. The Rumson rabbi was at the Memorial Day service in Rumson. How could anyone possibly be offended by someone invoking the name of Jesus Christ? This wasnt a non-sectarian event. The parade included The Boy and Girl Scouts, Knights of Columbus..etc. Also remember during the 9-11 candlelight vigil in FH Fields it was the rabbi that spoke and I, as a Christian, was not offended by this. I actually found him quite inspirational. Peraps in the future instead of offending the Christians in town, next year have a rabbi or someone from the synagogue speak at the event as well. I for one woluld not be offended by this and I am positive there will be no other FH residents that will.

We are a small minority, and believe me, we differ with each other on most things. As the expression goes, "2 Jews, 3 opinions, 4 congregations." But i will venture my opinion that all of us consider that invoking the name of the Christian Savior in a public ceremony, honoring those of all(or none, as the case may be) faiths who gave their lives for the country, goes beyond what we find acceptable and non-exclusionary in the public arena. As far as having our Rabbi speak-I will indeed ask him, but, as you might imagine given our small numbers, we do not have clergy in every community. As we would say in Yiddish, "Alluvei"-if only it were so!

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights. The amendment prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.

A very nice reprise of that excellent document The 1st amendment, Peter. But unless you believe I belong to a secret cabal intent on infringing upon the "free exercise of your religion", I can't imagine what the connection would be to any point i made. I realize these electronic conversations are often at cross purposes, but be assured that we Jews are the very last people who would ever think of limiting the hallowed freedoms of these United States.

Excellemt point, which is why i dont understand how you could take offense at someone mentioning Jesus Christ in a public arena but would welcome a rabbi. Fyi..sorry for the false impression...im Melissa Neczesny, I couldnt find my login, so I used my husbands. Would welcome you into my home any day for a spirited debate.
