Asbury Park Press Looking To Close Neptune Office
Office was considered state-of-the-art newspaper facility when it opened in 1985
The Asbury Park Press is putting its Neptune office building on the market and will begin to look for a new location, the newspaper reported Thursday.
According to the newspaper's website, "The company's manufacturing facility moved to Neptune from Asbury Park in 1980, followed by its news and business office operations in 1985."
The Route 66 office was considered state-of-the-art when the newspaper moved from its much smaller facility at Press Plaza in Asbury Park. The newspaper went beyond the warehouse look that was typical of media offices, and created a high-tech, modern facility with a cafeteria, a nurse's office and a running trail.

Who cares? Let them move and take their bias with them. It used to be a good paper, now there's nothing in it. It's become a propaganda rag for the Democratic Party. I cancelled my subscription a long time ago.

And ironically enough Doris, you choose to read and post here, a web paper practically run by a wing of the DNC itself, the Huffington Post, where 90% of the comments posted here are about all those "eeevil Republicans" or whichever slurring variation of the week they choose to replace that word.. Just take a gander in the comments below in this article alone.

The Asbury Park Press was nothing really until around The late 90's early 2000 when it was probing the "House of Cards real estate corruption". Before that the "Ocean County Observer" was a small competitor but lost out to the Press. I think the Press may have bought it. Not sure. Good research and reporting went into the Corruptions of more than one scam since then by the "Press".

typical 'classy' comments from Ocen-Monmouth below-the-Mason-Dixon rednecks.
apparently none of you are up on your biblical teachings - you're not supposed to take joy in another's misfortune....
more 'compassionate conservatism' ill feelings
in truth, the Press - and the Observer - broke a lot of important stories (Ciba-Giegy dumping toxins in the Toms River, Ritacco on the take, etc.)

Wow JoeS, I think biblical teachings also dont profess calling individuals like "redneck" me names! Eh Joe? And misfortune? Did we "rednecks" (plural) miss that in the article? i will agree with you on there reporting the news - Ciba Geigy and Ritacco - and keping the pulic informed but "breaking the news"? That would take investigative reporting and not just publishing it. if it was not for Jean Mickleson and Don Bennett those papers would have had little substance. Opps, and forgot Helen Fitzsimons! Another point you did present is the teachings of the Bible, and now thats real news I will always read "classy" Joe. Sorry!

A newspaper is a reflection of the community; it prints stories germane to the intellect or lack of intellect of the community. The Press must appeal to the downtrodden, the Fox news clientele, the low hanging fruit on the social tree; that is the only way it can make a profit in this area. If you think I am exaggerating, merely read some of the comments.

Now it's value is comparable to The Enquirer, The Star and other rags that report about 3 headed babies and I was impregnanted by an alien creature. Since Hollis Towns took the reins it got even worst. I'm seeing more reliable and honest news reporting on The Patch.

In my opinion, the "Asbury Park Press" peak some years ago and has been going downhill precipitously ever since it was purchased by Gannett. For those that don’t know, Gannett also owns "The Press Journal", that’s the newspaper in Westchester County, NY, that is publishing the names and addresses of LEGAL gun owners’ up-there. I’m not a gun owner, member of the NRA or any of that stuff; I just think it’s wrong for the newspaper to be doing it and am personally appalled by it. I am now boycotting all Gannett publications and other media, and am thinking of boycotting its advertisers and letting them know why I'm doing it. If you feel likewise, spread the word!

Do not forget they publish USA Today too. They also own a lot of ABC, NBC, & CBS affiliate stations around the country.
I stopped buying the Asbury Park Press years ago when I was unable to get any news on the rare "subway series" that Autumn. In my paper they omitted details for The World Series from their sport section because I was not in that precise area of the Gannet distributorship allowed to receive it(without paying more money, of course!). The wanted me to purchase a second paper just to read that story alone. The local town news can be gotten on line now, making them obsolete.

The Asbury Park Press, to me, will always be a special paper. One always tucked under my grandfathers arm when he made the trek to visit us, was a gift for my homesick mother. My father was a serviceman which gave us chance to read a variety of local papers, but the Asbury Park Press was always our slice of home. To me it is the smell of coffee and raisin toast on a Sunday while cutting coupons. It is the wonderful memory of a grandpop that always wore a suit, hat and a smile. If it were bias, than so be it. I choose not to tarnish the memory. And like many folk, my fireplace burns, my bird cage collects and i just might add it to the use of the doggie poop for the back yard after reading the ingenious commentary here.

All papers are failing. Electronic media like this is to blame plus here we go...liberals.
Liberals run the papers but only conservatives are mostly news junkies and readers of them. Most young liberals or democrats will not support a print paper yet they are written for them.

So according to your reasoning, we have the conservatives to blame for supporting the liberal press. How about both sides are showing a preference for quicker access without having to bring in a rain soaked lump to put in the oven.

That doesn't seem fair to the Patch. I have had a couple of instances where I complained and I must say the editor of the Berkeley Patch is straight shooting and just trying very hard to cover this complex story of a storm called Sandy. She tells you up front what her political leanings are and yet most of us read the stories and jump to the comments which are written by folks who hold all sorts of views.
To me, the Patch is a breath of fresh air. The Editor is if anything more than willing to let all sorts of opinions fly around and it's a shame if we who write those comments don't understand that more than politics are involved in this very complex mess we are in. Yes, there certainly could be streamlining of the administration of the programs and towns and committees and it would help if more towns supplied the Patch with in depth information about just what the rules of these many games are.
But there is a time for specific finger pointing if you know someone is not doing his or her job but this storm was neither a gift from the democrats or the republicans and when the chips are down it is going to be up to New Jerseyans to pitch in and help any and everyone in need. The more we can do for our communities, the less we will need government help.
And Governments on all levels are flat out broke. So when you finish typing here, head for a troubled spot and donate and hour or so of your time to helping things get better. We will all be better off for it.

I disagree with that. Patch seems to let all sorts of ideas through and only censors things most of us would agree are not fit for print. The Patch articles seem to be straight forward and are the product of journalism: yes, they can make mistakes but they are willing to correct them and they invite community participation via the comments section which is a whole lot larger than the space devoted to the articles printed which tend to be objective.
HuffPo also tends to let ideas float from folks from left to right but that can't be said for say The New York Times which seems to cherry pick responses from readers so that they primarily fall in line with that paper's editorial outlook. The Patch isn't doing that. Thank God.
It's time to be grateful for the few things that are working and it would help if people would think through what they are writing and not just sling mud. We have enough of that to clean up!

For your information the Asbury Park Press ran a story in today’s issue of their own paper (Friday) on the subject. According to the article, the Press Building on Rt. 66 will be sold, the Press will then rent space in a smaller facility and also they are closing their Toms Office. Not mentioned in the article but word has it that they are encouraging employees to take an early retirement package. First the Fort, now the Press, the handwriting is on the wall. This has nothing to do with liberals or conservatives, the patch or the Huffington Post, it is a sign of the times.

It's not just the Daily Mail. Newspapers from Canada to Europe and yes, Russia, are publishing articles that we need to read. The Drudge report lists so many world newspapers in its left hand column that it makes it easy to get news from other nations but with the understanding that those papers, just like ours, tend to have their own agendas. US papers are awful when it comes to covering stories that are taking place in other countries which in fact will affect us as well.
Give Drudge's left hand column a try because it's quick and certainly helps me try to understand things from other nations' points of view. And there are liberals and conservatives in their streams of journalism but at least they try to cover more than their own backyards.

It is amusing to see our Press defenders resort to name-calling because they defend an antiquated news outlet whose ideas and beliefs like their own have been relegated to the trash bin of history. Their editorials sound more like the whiny ravings of a petulent child than a responsible news outlet. Again like the Press defenders sound here. In desperation, they resort to publishing the toxic words of racists, like Eugene Robinson to boost sales. Pathetic. Maybe they can hire the racist from ESPN. It seems he's looking for a job. The Press stopped reflecting any community a long time ago. When the Charms Building was being demolished, where was the APP? Asbury Park made a deal to keep that place standing with the developer. There were a lot of qustions about the condition of the structure. Not only was the APP silent, I personally called them to see if they would cover the razing. They asked me for directions to the site! Now that's sad.

Clearly we have a choice. Unless one works for the Press and his or her job is in danger, this should not be a problem.
